A strike shorter than most lunch breaks is the last resort for mental health workers in the Nelson/ Marlborough area.
Mental health workers for the Gateway Trust will be striking from 3 till 4pm this afternoon after negotiations to save workers’ jobs from restructuring and DHB tender failed.
The Gateway Trust provides residential and community for youth and adults suffering from mental illness in the Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast areas.
Ria Holmes, the E Tū union organiser for the area, says staff are reluctant to leave their clients, but want to send a clear message to management.
